Waste of time. Polite disinterest.
That’s how I felt 3 minutes into my meeting yesterday with Joan Huffman’s Chief of Staff, Wroe Jackson.
It’s pretty telling when you open by asking these people, “How do you feel about eliminating property tax?”
If I asked you that, would you have something to say? Maybe not if you were trying to skirt the issue, right?
Well, that’s about the sum of my assessment on Senator Joan Huffman’s position. Of course, that was never said. But that’s the point, isn’t it?
If you search our group, you’ll see I’ve had a couple of meetings with Wroe before. Ms. Huffman is on the Senate Finance Committee and I am one of her constituents. Last time I spoke to Wroe (02 FEB 2017), Tom Glass and I asked for a meeting with her. Wroe replied she could allow 15 minutes if we would return to Austin another time.
Drive 330 miles. 15 minutes. 3 issues. We got the message.
I took this meeting yesterday for two reasons. First, because in a recent town hall, our fellow member Charles R. Wannall had received her invitation to discuss this issue. Second, because I thought it was time to see if anything had changed. I think not.
I ended the meeting as soon as it felt civil. And I promised Wroe I’d follow up with more information about why HB3742 was the best solution to eliminate property tax and how it could be done.
But until they get it, these people need to hear a clear and simple message from all of us:
No Relief. No Reform. #EliminatePropertyTax
